Hands-On Suturing Supplies
This 1.5 hour CE/CME course is a condensed version of our full IPE course, Transfer Tools for Midwives, EMS, and Receiving Providers. This version is designed specifically for those providing in-hospital care.
Transfers from home births and birth centers to hospitals happen regularly and are an important part of safe care for birthing people and babies. We know that approximately 10% of planned community births (homebirth and birth center births) transfer to the hospital when pain medication or labor augmentation is needed, or when complications arise.
Yet midwives, emergency services personnel, nurses, and receiving hospital providers don't receive training on how to work together as a care team. We often find ourselves trying to provide care in stressful emergency situations without the information or skills we need to do so effectively.
We're ready to change that and work together to improve care! This one-of-a-kind course:
- is a curriculum designed by midwives, emergency services personnel, nurses, and receiving hospital providers
- shares new collaborative methods for improving home birth and birth center to hospital transfers
- teaches communication skills critical to keep calm and clear during stressful situations
- includes clinical best practices
- models scenarios demonstrating these best practices for communication and care
- teaches creative tools for bridging relationships with other provider types
- includes everything you need to know about the other providers involved to support optimal care and smooth transfer across all settings of a community birth transfer
This course will help all provider types work together smoothly so we can improve outcomes and the experience of care for mothers and babies.
CME for MDs:
This activity has been approved for 1.50 Enduring Materials Self-Study Prescribed credits through March 11th, 2025. AAFP Prescribed credit is accepted by the American Medical Association as equivalent to AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ toward the AMA Physician's Recognition Award. When applying for the AMA PRA, Prescribed credit earned must be reported as Prescribed credit, not as Category 1.
CE for CNMs:
CME credit awarded for this course is also accepted as CE for the Certificate Maintenance Program by the American Midwifery Certification Board (AMCB).
CE for Nurses:
HiveCE is an approved provider of continuing education by the California Board of Nursing, and this course is provider approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider Number 17686, for 1.5 contact hours, through November 30th, 2025.
This course was previously approved by ACNM for 1.5 hours of continuing education, approval number 2021-125, exp 12/14/23. (CNMs may now use the CME approval instead.)

If we qualify for 50% off an Organizational Membership, how long does that discount last?
The discount lasts for the life of your membership. So if you sign up under one of the renewing payment options, it will continue until that membership is cancelled.

If I sign up for a renewing option, and the membership price is later raised, will I be charged the higher amount?
Simply put: No. A renewing membership will renew at the same price as when you signed up, even if there is a price increase for new memberships.

Does this replace the original Hands-On Suturing?
Nope! In fact, at this time we are only offering this course to those who have completed the original course.

Will this course be the same hybrid format of on-demand and live Zoom?
Hybrid, yes. But not exactly the same. This sequel includes over 10 hours of on-demand content, and a small group live Zoom session of 4 to 6 participants.

How much CE will this course provide? Is this CE course ACNM approved?
Approved for 13.5 Contact Hours by the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM) under ACNM Program Number 2025-024EA-04 through October 26th, 2027. This may be used by both CPMs and CNMs, at all national and state levels of certification and/or licensing.

What topics will this sequel cover?
Oh so many! The Course Curriculum below shows everything covered in the on-demand portion. (Click "show details" to expand each each section!) Topics include labial tears, tricky hymen situations, complicated vaginal and perineal repairs, five (5!) different techniques to manage bleeding vessels, new knots, new fancy stitches, two options for what to do if you run out of suture mid-repair...we tried to cover everything that folks have asked about.

How much does Suturing II cost?
We have set the initial price at $485 per person, which includes practice supplies* and a seat in the small group session. *Practice models and suture included; instruments and clamp stand not included.

Is there a payment plan option?
There are two payment plans available for Suturing II when you register via Instant Access: half-this-month, half-next-month; and pay-in-4. The total cost when paying this way is exactly the same. Supply kits and the ability to register in a live small group are available once half paid.

Are there any discounts?
At the moment, there is currently a "discount for everyone," as this is the only the introductory pricing. We will likely raise the price after this spring, at which time there will be discounts as part of the new pricing. In addition to the upfront costs, the ongoing costs for materials for this course are quite high. (Both the models needed, and the suture provided - over an entire box per student!) A "fair" price, based on our labor and supply costs, and by how similar offerings are priced, is well above what we are currently charging. As always, we charge the lowest price we can that allows us to continue to do this work.

Terms and Conditions
Due to the hybrid format of this course, there are different terms and conditions than our purely on-demand online courses.
By enrolling in this course, you are agreeing to these Terms and Conditions, so please read them carefully:
1. Upon enrollment, you will have instant access to the on-demand portion. The on-demand portion through Managing Excessive Wound Bleeding must be completed by one half hour prior to your small group session. (The cost for that session is included in your Instant Access course fee, but you will need to sign up for that session down the road.)
2. You also must pass the written test with an 80% or greater by one half hour prior to your small group session.
3. Attendance and participation in a live Zoom practice session is required. When you see a session date you'd like to attend, email [email protected]. You will be sent a special code to use to enroll for "free." Space is limited, and once you are enrolled in a session date, you will also need to follow all the Terms for that session date.
4. In order to take this course, you must have already passed Hands-On Suturing I, or have received a written exception to this policy. Please email [email protected] to request an exception. If you enroll in this course without passing Hands-On Suturing I, you will receive a refund less processing fees charged by the credit card processors, which could be up to 6%. If you aren't sure if you passed Hands-On Suturing I, please email [email protected] prior to enrolling in this course.
5. Certain supplies are required to participate in the live portions of this course. Supplies for participants outside the United States are handled on a case-by-case basis, please email [email protected] to discuss.
We provide the following supplies, at no additional fee:
1. Ample suture for practice
2. Practice models
These supplies do NOT need returned.
You are required to have, but we do NOT include in the course supplies:
1. Instruments (a needle driver, Russian forceps/other non-dominant hand instrument, TWO sets of hemostats, and a pair of scissors)
2. A clamp stand for your phone (same or similar to that used for Hands-On Suturing I)
3. A pair of gloves (non-sterile is fine)
6. While we only require you to finish part of the on-demand content prior to the live Zoom session, you will need to complete all of the on-demand content prior to your CE Certificate generating. Whether you do this before or after the live Zoom session is up to you.
7. The CE certifications require you to complete a course evaluation. This is at the end of the on-demand portion, please do not complete it until after your small group live Zoom session.
8. Your CE Certificate for 13.5 hours of continuing education will be sent via email once Steps 1-7 are complete. The date on the certificate, once sent, will be the date you completed all course requirements, including the course evaluation. If you enroll using a payment plan option, your CE Certificate will not be sent until all payments are complete.
Refunds and Cohort Exchanges
If BOTH the following conditions are met:
1. Less than 10% of the on-demand portion has been accessed.
2. It has been less than 30 days since enrollment.
...then you may receive a full refund less the credit card processing fee (that is what the card companies charge us when you pay, and we don't get it back if we refund).
