Upon completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

1. Understand the public health implications of cCHD screening



2. Identify the most common types of heart defects that pulse oximetry is used to detect


3. Demonstate the ability to follow the algorithm for cCHD screening

4. Discuss the best practices for screening accuracy



5. Implement cCHD screening in a non-hospital birthing center


HiveCE is an approved provider of continuing education by the California Board of Nursing, and this course meets the California Board of Nursing criteria for 2.5 hours of continuing education. Provider approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider Number 17686, for 2.5 contact hours. (This is widely accepted nationwide as continuing education for nurses and midwives.)

May be used as Category I CE for CPM renewals through NARM.

Approved for the NARM Midwifery Bridge Certificate, Category 2.

Previously approved by MEAC for 2.5 hours of continuing education under approval number M2021-37- 0201DE through January 14, 2023.

    Instructor Bio:

    Pat has enjoyed over thirty years of caring for newborns and their families. She received her BSN from the University of Oregon Health Sciences Center, her NNP certification from South Dakota State University, and her Masters of Nursing with an Education Specialty and DNP from Walden University. She recently retired from providing clinical support for the 10,000+ newborns of Legacy Health in the Portland Oregon area, including the Tele-Baby Program for remote leadership of neonatal resuscitation. She has received the honor of March of Dimes Distinguished Nurse of the Year for 2015. Outside the states, Pat enjoys opportunities to teach newborn care to health care staff abroad, including training NRP instructors and STABLE Program instructors in Vietnam.
